 New Zealand (South Island)

The Mataura River was awarded a water conservation order 1996, based on its outstanding fisheries and angling amenity values. It is undeniably New Zealand’s most prolific brown trout fishery. Anglers from all over the world travel to the banks of the Mataura year after year to enjoy the ultimate fly fishing experience.

The Mataura is the second biggest river of the region. Majority of the river is essentially fly fishing water and offers superb dry fly fishing. Rises appear even on the coldest days and at any one time you may see numerous trout freely rising to dancing insects.

Our base is situated in a small South Island town called Athol, right on the banks of the mighty Mataura River. From Athol we have numerous opportunities and different waterways with both Brown and Rainbow Trout.
Eg: Mararoa, Hamilton Burn, Oreti and Mavora Lakes, just to name a few.

All these waters hold large trout compared to Australian conditions. Average sizes in the Mataura are 3- 4lb, but there is always a good chance of catching a 5, 6 even 8lb Rainbows and Browns.
Trout populations are very high in the upper Mataura, drift dives have recorded 40 fish/km. You can expect to cast to countless fish in a day.

West Coast
Flying directly into Christchurch on a Saturday, it’s a breathtaking 3.5 hour drive to our accommodation in Moana. Surrounded by a multitude of rivers and lakes. Our guides, Brent Beadle and Russell Hanson,  will treat you to freestone rivers, spring creeks, sight fishing from boats, and an optional overnight stay in a backcountry hut in the Grey Valley System.

Helicopter fishing is also available into remote wilderness headwaters of streams. Conditions apply and extra fees apply.

Hawkes Bay North Island

The Hawkes Bay area is amazing! It does take a little longer to get there, flying to Auckland or Wellington with a connector to Napier, but then that's where the fun begins!

The trip has basically two parts, initially spending time on Ngamatea Station, an inaccessible area(to everyone else!) in the genuine high country of the NZ plateau. The rivers abound with rainbows  that are rarely fished at around 5 and 6lb, but up to 8lb and above in some of the other surrounding rivers. It is a genuine wilderness experience with deer, hares and pheasants literally running in front of the car!

The remaining few days are spent in the lowland streams that offers plentiful  sightfishing to both browns and rainbows, and with hatches in the evening that will amaze even the most seasoned fly fisher.

 Each Trip

Each trip member receives at least 4 full days with the best New Zealand guides available, fishing the best Kiwi rivers and streams, plus 2 days shared fishing with the Pro-Angler host.
New Zealand guided fishing usually starts at around 8.30/9am, dependant on areas fished and travelling time, finishing around 5/5.30pm.

Whilst it is not the marathon efforts that we often do in Australia because of heat, time of day and fish captures; due to the walking distances covered and the amount of large fish that you will find, those hours are generally more than enough, six days in a row.

However, if you are still yearning, feel free to fish well into the evening rise and into the night if you needed to, the Mataura and Lake Brunner are literally loaded with wild fish. Although I guarantee this extra fishing will diminish after 1 or 2 times, the days really are packed with enough fishing time to give anyone a genuine fix!

The guide or Pro-Angler host will cater for all your needs, lunch, drinks, flies, tippets, etc.

Requirements

  • Faster action, 9ft, 5, 6 or 7wt rods, generally along the lines of the Stalker Aire or Master Plus ranges really suit the NZ conditions perfectly. -Dull coloured grey or khaki weight forward floating lines.
  • Rubber soled wading boots are a must. Breathable waders just make everything much more comfortable. The kiwi idea of wet wading is still popular as there are no snakes, but warm and dry sits better with most anglers.
  • An assortment of "commercially tied" flies, specifically tungsten beaded nymphs, parachutes, duns, humpy’s, etc.
  • Quality amber polarized glasses; we have found Mako to be the best quality available.
  • Peaked cap, dull shirt, light vest or chest pack, camera, insect repellent and a big smile are all that’s needed!

All customers booked on a Pro-Angler trip receive a one off 15% discount on purchases made prior to departure.

Generally 3 anglers per Pro-Angler host, with fishing days being 2 per Kiwi guide, 1 with the Pro-Angler host.

Southland trips depart from Melbourne, Sydney or Brisbane airport, flying  direct to Quennstown, flight time approximately 3.5 hours. West Coast trips are via Christchurch, and Hawkes Bay is via Auckland/Wellington and a connector to Napier.

Duration is one full week. Transport is all provided complimentary via the Pro-Angler host or the kiwi guides. All meals throughout the trip are provided.

It is your responsibility to provide; flights, travel insurance, fishing license, and any alcohol that is required.

CHRISTMAS ISLAND, THE PRO-ANGLER PACKAGE:

Your trip starts with a flight to Nadi, Fiji, to wait for the midnight departure for the connection to Christmas Island with Air Pacific. The flight to Christmas Island is about 4 hours, arriving at 6.30am on a Wednesday morning. You will be met at the airport by our guide, who will drive you to the lodge. The rest of the day can be spent recovering from the flight, checking your fishing gear or we can arrange a shorter into session to get off the mark.

The fishing is all by recommendation: the guide will either suggest shore or flats fishing via boat access. You can request either! The boat is a comfortable 30-foot "local" (with roof for sun protection) with a local boatman at the helm. There will be one guide available for every two fishermen. A personal guide can be arranged for a fee ($100 per day). Our fishing times are flexible, so if you want an extra early start, let us know the day before!

The food is good and ample: the evening meal will consist of mostly fish (NOT BONEFISH, but tuna, wahoo or sweetlip), with plenty of vegetables, etc. Meat is also served regularly: chicken, pork and beef are flown in from Hawaii... Lobster can be a special treat! Lunch is gourmet sandwiches, packed in the esky (with plenty of chilled bottled water), and breakfast is a large cooked American style meal.

Soft drinks and beer can be purchased at reasonable rates (an honesty system). For mixers, please let us know, and we will do our best to obtain these, but better to buy duty free on the way.

The accommodation is comfortable: there are three air-conditioned rooms with two single beds each. There are en-suite bathrooms, with hot water available. There is an outside area to sit and relax after the day’s fishing. Fresh water rinsing facilities are available for yourself and your gear, and a washing service is all there for you!

All the transport is by covered truck, with padded seats. At the end of the week's fishing, you will be transported back to the airport for your flight home. So... a quick summary of the costs involved:
